The Oldies But Goldies show by veteran duo James Marais and Monique Cassells, pays tribute to the golden era of music from the ‘50s to the ‘80s, featuring artists such as Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, Little Richard, Patsy Cline, The Platters, the Righteous Brothers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Eddie Cochran, Ritchie Valens, the Hollies, the Eagles, the Monkees, Tom Jones, Cher, Queen, Dire Straits and many more. The show is a mini-theatrical experience, featuring the dynamic vocal and visual performances of James and Monique, alternating as a duo and individual performers, who also do multiple costume changes throughout.
James Marais has been an entertainer since 1992, and was named South Africa’s no. 1 Elvis Presley Tribute Artist at the Elvis Festival Africa 2010, held in Storms River Village. He travelled to Cardiff, Wales to represent SA in the Elvis World Cup, finishing fourth out of 11 competitors from around the globe. He featured on Noot Vir Noot on SABC 2 in 2012 and 2013, in three different broadcasts. In his Elvis tribute, James is able to accurately capture the magical moves that Elvis performed at his peak. His beautiful costumes do the King justice, representing Elvis during all three decades of his career, spanning the ‘50s through to the ‘70s. His amazing vocals are a great tribute to Elvis, as he is able to adapt his voice to the many different genres of music the great man covered throughout his career.
In addition to his renowned Elvis tribute, he is able to adapt his voice to the music of many more legends, including artists such as Roy Orbison, Tom Jones, Shakin Stevens, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and many more. He is known for his audience interaction, and people respond very well.
Monique Cassells has been performing since 2002, and was a member of two successful bands, namely “Generations” (from 2003 to 2005) and “Cole Street” (from 2005 to 2008) as their principal lead singer and acoustic rhythm guitarist. She began her successful partnership with James in 2009. She is a powerful and energetic performer, both in her vocals and stage presence, and enjoys interacting with her audience.
Monique is a very accomplished vocalist, having performed many different genres of music over the years, including rock ‘n roll, rock, pop, country, blues, ballads and even light classical. The range of music she has mastered has astounded many an audience. She performs songs by the likes of the Righteous Brothers, the Platters, Ritchie Valens, Cher, Patsy Cline, Little Richard, the Beatles, the Hollies, Freddie Mercury and many more.
James and Monique are a powerful duo and perform some of the best Beatles and Everly Brothers duets you are likely to hear. They also put their own stamp on some well-known hits not previously performed as a duet, even songs by Elvis Presley. They have performed together at many different venues and for diverse functions over the years, most notably in three of James’ productions at the Roxy Revue Bar, GrandWest Casino in Goodwood, several performances at Die Boer Theatre in Durbanville, The Barn in Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay, Caledon Casino, Jamrock Theatre in Brackenfell, All Star Theatre in Brackenfell, Mykonos Casino in Langebaan, and Villa Pascal Theatre in Durbanville.
